This article discusses the film practice of Dziga Vertov by examining images of railways, showing how his artistic practice was influenced by the October Revolution and the Civil War. It establishes a relationship between the Taylorian organization of railways and the formal dynamics of Vertov’s aesthetics. The first part discusses the crucial role played by the railways during the October Revolution. It also analyses how Lenin’s struggle to politicize the workers was related to the railway system. Thus, the socio-cultural roots of the Bolsheviks’ obsession with railways are revealed. The second part introduces the dynamic art of Dziga Vertov. It shows how the political situation after the October Revolution forced him to invent new cinematic forms. The third part analyses and contextualizes his early agit-train experiments. The fourth and final part demonstrates that the railways and the cinema intersected at the Taylorisation of the labour process.
