This study of the film Champion For Us, which is based on the life story of the famous jockey Halis Karataş, analyzes spectators’ responses to the film. In-depth interviews were conducted with a total of 18 spectators, 9 females and 9 males between the ages of 20 and 50. Initially, spectator-oriented mass communication research, reception research in cinema, and the context of the real-life story are recognized. Then the interviews are analyzed from an historical-materialist and ethnographic point of view, considering, especially, variables of the interviewees’ age and gender. The results show a difference in the responses of interviewees who witnessed the ’90s and those who were born in the ’90s. Those who witnessed the period commented mostly that the story of love and success in the film was realistic and impressive, while those who had not witnessed the period did not see it as realistic and impressive. The responses of male and female interviewees were also dissimilar. Females said that they felt closer to the more emotional scenes, whereas male spectators said that they found scenes with patriarchal codes to be the most impressive.
